Rant: The Video Game Industry

This is something that has been a long time coming. There was a point in time where I thought I didn’t even need to post this, but it’s slowly creeping back up again. When it comes to the video game industry, I’ve been losing more and more hope for it. A lot of companies have forgotten what it means to make a video game. I guess this’ll tie in with the EA and Visceral Games post I was planning on making as well as a Bethesda rant I had planned.

As a gamer, I’m sure we can all agree that video games are really something special. This will happen with any form of media, but, there are companies that will try to milk money out of anything. EA and Bethesda are a great example for this. I mean, let’s be honest, do we really need games that were already released to be remade JUST FOR VR? I get it, VR is the up and coming market and technically it can be seen as helping it get off it’s feet. But there is absolutely no need to release the VR version of the game for the price of a brand new game! When any game is remade or remastered, they’ll usually release it for $40. That’s perfectly understandable. But now Bethesda is trying to set a new standard of “Just because it’s VR means it should be full priced”. I see no reason to spend $500 on a VR headset just to spend more money on a game that was already made years ago for full price. That’s not helping the VR market, that’s milking it until it’s dry! Bethesda, if you want to help the VR market, it’s really ease: Release your VR games for $40 or put a DLC option for $10 in your games. I could definitely see myself buying Fallout 5 with the VR DLC for $70. Plus that also doesn’t limit us in case we don’t want to continue in VR at that moment.

Now on the other side of the spectrum, Electronic Arts. A company that I grew up with. Home to one of my favorite game series’: Command and Conquer. I feel that’s where a lot of my hate for EA stands to be honest. Not only did they disband Westwood, the creators of C&C and Dune, but they destroyed the series with the abomination that was C&C4 left the series to die. And what pisses me off the most is that during one of the C&C Battlecasts the developers of C&C4 pretty much said fuck you to the gamers when they showed the games new style of gameplay (If I can find this episode I’ll post it in the comments.

One thing that the developers and the players both forget is that the players are in charge. It might not seem like it, but that’s because we let it get this way. If you’re as sick as I am from seeing game companies pump out cookie cutter bullshit, then fight back! We don’t need a new Call of Duty every year! We don’t need day 1 DLC! And we don’t need game developers ruining a game series by changing the style completely and saying fuck the gamer! Don’t fall into the whims of the developer! You’re in charge of what game companies release, use that power!

Now before I sound anymore like the leader to a rebellion, I’m going to end here. Just keep in mind that we don’t have to deal with everything game devs put in front of us.

P.S. Talk about last minute, huh? I got it done and on Monday I’ll start my 2 posts a week. You’ll see a lot more non-rant posts. My thoughts will be more collected in those. I’m thinking that my next post will be a small review on Your Name. Switch over to the anime side of things. I might also talk about Playerunknown’s Battleground. I know the game has been out for a while by now, but I think now is a great time to talk about it. That might end up as a rant though because I have a lot of things to say about it. I’ll try to keep the rants to a minimum though. At the very worst I might make a separate rant post. We’ll see. Good luck through this week, everyone.
